Golden Gate Kiev – Things to do in Kiev

The Golden Gate in Kiev was built in 1037 during the reign of Price Yaroslav the Wise. It is one of Kiev’s most iconic landmarks. The 12 meter height gate was part of a fortification and was actually the main entrance to the city centre. It was considered an inaccessible fortress by the city’s many enemies that tried to conquer it.

History

Unfortunately the wars and father-time took its toll on the gates and during the 17th century the Golden Gate was almost completely destroyed. Military engineers decided in 1751, that the Golden Gate was too dangerous to travel through and ordered it to be buried and move the entrance to the city of Kiev elsewhere.

It took almost 40 years before they start slowly restoring the Golden Gate to its former glory under the supervision of Tsar Nicholas. Although there was no documentation of how the Golden Gate actually looked, the renovated structure was built on the foundation and design of the remaining gates that were found during the restoration.

Golden Gate in Kiev is one of the few buildings of Kiev Rus, which have come down to our day. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
